Summer of fun heading to Crewe!

Crewe Town Council is pleased to announce that a packed programme of family activities and Heritage celebrations will be on offer for residents and visitors this summer!

Operation Summer will return for the second year, featuring an exciting family-friendly programme of FREE summer activity that will keep the kids entertained during the summer holidays.

Learn the skills you would need to run away with the circus… or dance around Queens Park in giant butterfly wings… experience outdoor theatre and storytelling that will captivate the wriggliest of viewers… and more!

The schedule has been programmed by Crewe Town Council and will take place at five community locations between Monday 24 July and Thursday 31 August 2023:

  • Queens Park
  • Crewe Library
  • Crewe Heritage Centre
  • Christ Church
  • Lyceum Square

The full programme can be accessed via the Crewe Town Council Operation Summer webpage and leaflets will be distributed to Crewe Library, Crewe Heritage Centre and a range of other community locations:

All of the activities are free-to-access family sessions. A small number of activities at Crewe Library require attendees to book a place on 01270 375295 or via a bookings link. For all events, children need to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

This summer, visitors can also come and see the heritage celebration “Forging History: 180 years of the Crewe Works” exhibition at the Crewe Heritage Centre and immerse themselves in the sounds, smells and sights of the past! Crewe Town Council has worked with partners Crewe Heritage Centre to create an interactive and engaging experience which will be open each weekend and Bank Holiday between 1 July and 10 September and every Wednesday in August.

Join us as we commemorate the move of the Grand Junction Railway Engineering Works to Crewe and the impact it had on the town:

Site admission charges apply aside from FREE access Operation Summer Wednesdays in August and Saturday 9 September.

The seasonal summer programme is brought to an end with our FREE Heritage Open Days event. Heritage Open Days is a national festival celebrating local grass roots heritage, making heritage accessible to local communities. The festival runs in September each year and will run between 8 and 17 September 2023.

Whether you want to know more about your family history, visit places not normally open to the public, or join a heritage group, we have something for you at the Crewe Heritage Open Days!

After the success of the 2022 event, the FREE Crewe Heritage Fair will return to Crewe Heritage Centre on Saturday 9 September to showcase groups and organisations interested in Crewe’s past together under one roof.

A Crewe Town Council spokesperson commented: “It’s so exciting to see the return of Operation Summer again this year, building on last year’s success and range of activities.

We’ve tried to provide free family-friendly activities for most days through the summer holidays, hoping that this will help to keep children and families entertained and engaged in Crewe without costing the earth. We’ve got rocket-making to story-telling sessions, craft workshops to outdoor theatre and more, there is hopefully something for everyone.

A huge thank you to all of our partners for working with us and helping to co-ordinate the delivery of events and activities for local families around the town.”
