Pop Up Parks project makes a difference in Crewe!

In May 2022, Crewe Town Council formed and part-funded a new partnership to develop and deliver a “Pop Up Parks” project with local charity The Wishing Well. The aim of the project is to enable people of all ages within Crewe to participate in free active recreation within the parks and green spaces of the town.

The Wishing Well is a leading local provider of community-based health and wellbeing initiatives. Over the last two years, it has delivered a range of sport and play programmes across south Cheshire and has built a reputation as a trusted sport and play delivery provider.

The “Pop Up Park”’ sessions launched on Monday 6th June at Queen Street Park and further weekly sessions have since been held at Samuel Street Park and Derby Street Park. The aim is that 300 local residents will benefit from taking part in the sessions, which are scheduled to run until early October.

Activities include sport, recreational play and use of inflatable equipment and non-equipment games. The sessions are delivered by experienced coaches and supported by community volunteers.

The programme will also be rolled out to Lansdowne Road Park, Westminster Street and Valley Brook this summer!

How can I take part?

Just turn up! The sessions are FREE and there is no need to book. Have a look at the schedule below to see where and when:

Pop Up Parks Programme Summer 2022

Crewe Town Mayor – Cllr Nan Walton – and Chair of the Community Plan Committee – Cllr Benn Minshall – attended the Queen Street Park session last night and were impressed with the experience.

Cllr Minshall said: “There were approximately 30 children playing tennis and football, and two of the older ones now want to do some sort of volunteering to get sports/coaching qualifications so that they can help to run future sessions. We spoke with several generations of one family – right from great-grandparents down to their great-grandchild – and they said that the last four weeks has totally changed their quality of life as a family.”

The Wishing Well CEO, Charles Maines, is excited about the project:

“The return of community sport and play sessions in our local parks and playing fields is great to see. Thanks to the support of Crewe Town Council we are so pleased to bring this “Pop Up Parks” concept to Crewe and we look forward to an action-packed summer of sessions that will increase activity levels, build friendships and create lasting memories.”
