Update 3rd November: Following the Government’s announcement that there will be another lockdown beginning on 5th November, in association with Royal British Legion, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the limited service that was planned.
Royal British Legion will lay all the wreaths that have been dropped off at the Council office, as originally intended, but there will be no service of any kind on Memorial Square. Members of the public may lay their own wreaths at a time of their choosing, but are reminded to observe social distancing and lockdown rules.
Crewe Town Council and The Royal British Legion are formalising the arrangements for what will be a “significantly different” Remembrance Sunday service for 2020.
Councillor Benn Minshall, Mayor of Crewe, said “Remembrance Sunday in Crewe is regarded as one of the largest events of its kind in the wider area – and rightly so. In normal times, we would have a big parade with the likes of Crewe Brass Band, uniformed cadets, scout groups and thousands of people on the square; unfortunately, we are not in normal times, and this year is going to be a significantly different Remembrance Sunday – similar to the VE Day and VJ Day anniversaries earlier this year.”
The event this year will see a limited number of attendees – which is in accordance with formal guidance concerning public gatherings – a small Civic Party and members of The Royal British Legion, military personnel and Emergency Services will be invited to lay a wreath on the day; with Businesses, Schools and Community Groups having the option for a wreath to be laid on their behalf.
Councillor Minshall added “We are making the public aware that there is a national Doorstep Remembrance Campaign for 2020, and as much as we would love for the town to come together on Memorial Square, we are strongly encouraging as many people as possible to take part in that Doorstep Remembrance on Sunday 8th November at 11am so that, actually, we can have something on a much wider scale which Crewe will not have seen before.”
Crewe Town Council have built in arrangements for anyone who is not formally on the guest list to have a wreath laid on their behalf – they are invited to purchase a wreath of their own, and deliver it to the Crewe Town Council Offices at 1 Chantry Court, Forge Street, Crewe, Cheshire CW1 2DL; or, simply request via this page on the website, for a wreath to be laid in their name no later than 2pm Thursday 5th November 2020.
Any wreaths which have been received by Crewe Town Council will then be placed on the War Memorial during the morning of Remembrance Sunday, and those names read out to note their commemoration.
