The Mayor and Deputy Mayor together with Cllr Bailey were delighted to attend the first meeting of the Crewe Youth Council that was held on 23rd March at the Town Council offices. Twelve members drawn from local schools and colleges attended the first meeting, elected a Chair/Deputy Chair and gave some thoughts to the issues and challenges faced by young people in Crewe. The draft minutes highlight the issues identified at the first meeting and show how positive the young people are about identifying what needs to change/improve and how they might help to achieve those changes.
The Youth Council was pleased to welcome representatives from Congleton Town Council who talked about their experiences in engaging with young people in a similar way.
The Youth Council has a budget of £5k to spend in its first year and plans to meet monthly to look at a range of issues. The Town Clerk (Steve McQuade) highlighted the work that had already been done with young people as part of the development of the Community Plan. This in itself had highlighted a number of concerns, some of which were reinforced by the views of the new youth members.
The make up of the Youth Council is still not complete and we would like to encourage other groups or individuals to express interest in being represented on the Youth Council. This might include cadet groups, sports groups etc. who feel they can make a contribution to the wider debate in Crewe.
Cllr Pam Minshall (Town Mayor) and Cllr Bailey (the youngest member on the Town Council) would be delighted to speak to the press and highlight how pleased they were to see the Youth Council taking forward the issues that matter to young people in Crewe.
