Remembrance Sunday

Remembering The Beloved Fallen

Royal British Legion will lay all the wreaths that have been dropped off at the Council office, as originally intended, but there will be no service of any kind on Memorial Square. Members of the public may lay their own wreaths at a time of their choosing, but are reminded to observe social distancing and lockdown rules.

Remembrance Sunday, which this year falls on 8th November, is a day for the whole nation to remember and honour those who sacrificed their lives to secure and protect our freedom.

The event commemorates the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars, later conflicts such as the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and other conflicts such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq.

This year, despite restrictions imposed by Covid-19, the service in Crewe will go ahead, but will be more limited in scope and smaller in size than in previous years.

If you usually attend the service as a spectator, we are keen to encourage you to pay your respects from a distance instead, and not attend in person. We will be filming the event and will share the footage online as soon as possible after the event.

This year, sadly there will not be a parade through the town centre, or refreshments at the Municipal Building.

Crewe Brass, the Corps of Drums and the Funky Choir are not allowed to perform at the event due to Government regulations, and the numbers of participants in the service will be heavily restricted.
Important message to all wreath-layers:

We have reviewed the site plan of the event, and taken specialist Covid-19 advice in laying out how it can happen safely, within the Government regulations. In order that the event can go ahead at all, it is necessary to restrict the number of people who can participate.

This means that the number of wreath layers that can be accommodated as part of the service is much less than usual and we hope the public will understand that priority for those places must be give to representatives of military and uniformed groups.

Every year many representatives of community groups, local businesses, political parties and other non-military groups attend the event to pay their respects. The Act of Remembrance is important and we are proud that it is strongly held local tradition. However, there is not enough space to accommodate the usual number of wreath-layers at the event, so we are appealing for everyone to be as understanding as possible of this unusual situation and would like to suggest the following:

The Royal British Legion are offering to lay a wreath on behalf of anyone who would like to attend but is unable to do so because of the limited event capacity. Wreaths will be carefully laid before the service, and all names would be announced after the military wreath-laying is complete.
Wreaths can be placed independently after the official service is concluded and the event is dispersed.

Please note, we will not be able to accommodate anyone just turning up on the day to lay a wreath. We are having to carefully control numbers so everyone who is participating can do so safely. If we don’t strictly control numbers, the event will not be allowed to go ahead at all.

Anyone who would like to avail themselves of the wreath-laying service should drop their wreath off, with the correct dedication already completed, at the Crewe Town Council office before 5th November 2pm. Officers are working from home a lot at the moment, so it is advisable to let the office know to expect you. If dropping wreaths off, please leave them in the original packing box to keep them safe.

Office address is Crewe Town Council, 1 Chantry Court, Forge Street, Crewe, CW1 2DL

Everyone who has been part of the service in previous years will be contacted directly.
