Council News: Town Council comments on proposals to change fire cover in Crewe

Crewe Town Council welcomed the Chief Officer of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and the Vice Chair of the Fire brigades Union, Cheshire Branch to its meeting on the 14th November. Council listened to presentations explaining and critiquing proposals to convert the 2nd pump at Crewe Fire Station from a fully manned service to an on call service. Members then asked a variety of questions which were answered by both parties.
The Leader of Council, Cllr Simon Yates commented after the meeting:
‘I felt the debate was extremely good and it was clear that Councillors have great sympathy with the position in which the Fire Authority finds itself after several years of funding cuts. However, Councillors were not convinced that the proposed change would not have an impact on the safety of the public and the emergency services workers themselves and have asked the Fire Authority to think again, particularly given the developments which are to take place in Crewe in the next few years.
For these reasons, Council resolved last night to oppose the proposed change and to lobby for the retention of the status quo. I call upon the residents of Crewe and the neighbouring villages to also oppose the changes and to make their views known via the consultation portal (email comments to firstname.lastname@example.org ) . I trust that the decision to be taken by the Fire Authority in February will be the right one ’
