Crewe Town Council is leading a three-year partnership with local charity The Wishing Well to deliver free “Street Sports” physical activities and recreational play for young people within local parks throughout the town.

The aim of the project is to encourage children aged between 8 and 16 years of age to spend more time out of doors, have fun in a safe space, encourage pride in local green spaces and be more active.

Sessions for the first year of the project will begin on Monday 1st July until Friday 1st November 2024 and will take place in designated park locations each day between Mondays and Fridays.

Funding has been committed by Crewe Town Council to deliver the project for three years and it is anticipated that around 800 local young people will directly benefit by taking part in the sessions. All activities will be delivered by suitably qualified facilitators. Fifteen volunteer roles will also be created to support the project.

The classes will be held in five local parks within Crewe:

Queen Street Park, CW1 4AE
Mondays 5pm-6pm 1st July – 28th October 2024
McLaren Street Park, CW1 3SP
Tuesdays 5pm-6pm 2nd July – 29th October 2024

Thursdays 5pm-6pm 4th July – 31st October 2024

How can young people (aged 8-16) take part?

The drop-in sessions are FREE for Crewe residents. Comfortable clothing and suitable footwear should be worn for all activities and bring a bottle of water.

A spokesperson for Crewe Town Council commented:

“This is a fantastic initiative for the young people of Crewe, which will have a direct impact on activity levels and help them to have facilitated fun outdoors in our local parks. Crewe Town Council is committed to leading the way in finding new projects to effectively engage with the local community and improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.”

Charles Maines, Chief Executive Officer of The Wishing Well said:

The Wishing Well are delighted to be working in partnership with Crewe Town Council to bring Street Sports back to Crewe. As a concept, this programme aims to provide young people with the opportunity to take part in multi-sports activities every evening across the summer for the next three years. The power of sport and physical activity can provide children and young people with the opportunity to get active and improve their health & wellbeing whilst developing confidence, communication and key social skills such as teamwork, leadership and problem solving.”

“We are also pleased to share that this Street Sports project provides both job and volunteer opportunities for local people to have a positive impact in their local community. If anyone is interested in supporting the development and delivery of this community project please contact The Wishing Well via [email protected] or by calling the team on 01270 256919.”
