Town Council calls on business and residents to spend #InCrewe

The Finance Committee of Crewe Town Council met last night (20th March) to look at its own performance in supporting the economy of Crewe.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Simon Yates said:

‘The Town Council has always had a policy to return money that is raised from local residents back into the Crewe economy where possible and so it was very good that Councillors were informed that approximately 75% of the Town Council`s spend on goods and services is returned to the local economy. Although this is a good performance we need to do better, particularly at a time when Crewe businesses need support and so the Town Council will discuss with South Cheshire Chamber what other measures can be considered and we will examine other policy changes that can have an impact. It is appropriate that as much as possible of the money provided by Crewe residents is spent with locally.

I am also pleased that around 30k of the Town Council`s budget goes directly to local  community groups and  voluntary organisations operating in Crewe through the Grants Scheme, this is another example of local money helping local people.

Today, I am therefore calling on residents and business to look at what they can do to increase support for the local economy. Price is obviously important in these challenging times, the convenience of online shopping is tempting, but that results in money being spent outside the town. All I am asking is that before you spend that you ask yourself how you can contribute to supporting our shops and businesses‘
