“Generation Music” Festival led by young people showcases local youth talent

📅 Wednesday 17th July
📌 Crewe Market Hall
⏰ 12 noon until 9pm (family programme between 3.30pm and 6pm)

Local young performers, music lovers and families are invited to get involved in “Generation Music”, a mini youth festival taking place in Crewe town centre on Wednesday 17th July (from 12 noon until 9pm).

Created by Crewe Town Council, facilitated by arts charity RicNic, and produced by a team of local 16-24 year olds, this Youth Music Project will showcase local talent and give visitors the chance to learn new dance styles, have a go at samba drumming and take to the stage in open mic events!

Visitors to the event at Crewe Market Hall can expect to enjoy live music performances from local young soloists and bands, free family workshops for under 5s, Lindy Hop dance sessions and drumming workshops, as well as craft activities, circus skills workshops and free face painting.

Food traders at Crewe Market Hall will be offering a range of special dining deals for audiences attending the event, with children able to dine for as little as £1 at some stalls.

Generation Music has been developed from ideas generated in visits to local schools and colleges, exploring what our young people in Crewe want to see in their local events programme. They wanted to produce an event that was inclusive and accessible to anyone, where anyone could have their moment in the spotlight and where families could come together to enjoy music.

There are still slots available for performances throughout the event, including:

  • an under 18s open mic session
  • a space for local poets, writers and spoken word artists to share their work
  • an over 18’s open mic event hosted by local drag queen Stella Black.

Crewe Town Council is committed to delivering projects that help to raise the aspirations of young people in Crewe, allowing them to achieve their potential and develop interests in the arts and culture. This Youth Music Project has been designed to facilitate participation in a high-quality, creative activity and offer a valuable learning experience that supports local young talent.

Jennifer Holyhead, Executive Director at RicNic stated:

“Our young producers and workshop contributors have been working incredibly hard to plan and produce this event for their community.  Listening to the ideas of their peers, they have created a programme of music and arts activities designed to be enjoyed by all ages.  We encourage everyone to come along on 17th July and enjoy this free event – why not spend your working lunch break learning how to Lindy Hop or bring the family down after-school for drumming and circus skills.”

A representative from Crewe Town Council commented:

“We are excited to see this grassroots music event taking shape and encourage local young performers to sign up and be part of showcasing Crewe’s fantastic young talent! Generation Music is a free, family-friendly event for all ages, with the opportunity to learn new skills, take part in activities and enjoy live performances.”
