Remembrance Sunday, which this year falls on Sunday 14th November 2021, is a day for the whole nation to remember and honour those who sacrificed their lives to secure and protect our freedom.
The event commemorates the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars, later conflicts such as the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and other conflicts such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Last year due to COVID-19, it was not possible to hold a formal Remembrance Service because of lockdown requirements. This year, it is planned that two Remembrance Services will be held in Memorial Square, Crewe town centre:
- Thursday 11th November (for schools – by invitation)
- Sunday 14th November
This decision has been made by Crewe Town Council in partnership with the Crewe branch of the Royal British Legion, to incorporate a schools Remembrance Service into the programme of commemorations on 11th November.
This schedule has also been designed with safety in mind and has been guided by the latest national and government advice.
Remembrance Day Service for our younger generation – Thursday 11th November 2021
The service to be held on 11th November provides an opportunity for young people from Crewe to be actively engaged within Crewe’s Remembrance commemorations, encouraging an understanding of all who have died in the service of their country.
Schools and colleges within Crewe ward boundaries have been invited to send representatives to attend. The service will provide an opportunity to come together to show collective respect to all of those who gave their tomorrow for our today.
Schools who wish to join us will gather at 10.30am and the short service will be followed by a two-minute silence at 11am.
The Crewe Town Council Heritage Officer is also available to advise school history coordinators on learning resources to support Remembrance. If you would like to find out more, please contact [email protected].
Remembrance Sunday Service – Sunday 14th November 2021
The annual Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade commemorations will begin with the Parade at 10.20am, which will start from underneath the old Library on Prince Albert Street, proceeding to Memorial Square.
At 11am, a two-minute silence will be observed, giving guests, residents and visitors the opportunity to make their own personal silent tribute to all who have died in the service of their country.
Laying of wreaths
The wreaths of our dignitaries and uniformed services will be laid as part of the Remembrance Service.
Additional attendee wreaths may also be laid at the end of the formal service. To purchase a wreath, please contact Paul Fox at the Crewe Royal British Legion as soon as possible, but by 22nd October at the latest: [email protected].
